83rd Anniversary of the Battle of CreteSaturday 25 May 2024. The 2/2 were invited to lay a wreath at The Eternal Flame in the forecourt of the Shrine of Remembrance to mark the 83rd anniversary of the Battle of Crete.
This is a significant annual event which has a large attendance of Greek & Cretan family descendants, the Consul General for Greece in Melbourne, together with Senior Representatives of the Hellenic Armed Forces who were visiting from Greece for the occasion, Australian Defence Forces, Veteran Associations and Victoria's Greek Australian Community. 2/2 President Malcolm Fallon represented our Association and laid the wreath on behalf of the association. Following this commemoration a further ceremony was held at the Australian Hellenic Memorial in the Domain Gardens. Anzac Day 2024 Another ANZAC Day commemoration has come and gone. President Malcolm and our historian Terry represented the 2/2 Field Regiment Association at the Oakleigh Grammar School ANZAC Commemoration Assembly on Wednesday where Terry Cole was a keynote speaker to over 750 students and staff. The school's planning and conduct and the attentive behaviour was a standout and the school is to be lauded for the ceremony. Special thanks to teacher Natasha Spanos (who is also the Chair of The Battle of Crete & Greece Commemorative Council) for her assistance and invite. An Appreciation plaque was presented to Principal Mark Robertson and the school acknowledging their support to the 2/2. A very memorable day. On Thursday morning around 30 marchers assembled at the meeting point and marched to The Shrine led by Vice President Derek. Again the 2/2 excelled with one of the largest contingents of descendants within Regiments. Following the march, the traditional photo opportunities were taken. A special thanks to Oakleigh Grammar School and Natasha Spanos again for providing 6 outstanding students as Banner Bearers. Each student was given a 2/2 lanyard & pen as a thank you. Then it was off to the Rising Sun hotel for what is fast becoming another standout lunch event for the Association. Twenty six descendants attended the lunch and the Association has already booked the hotel for 2025!
Finally to everyone who participated, we thank you for your support in keeping the 2/2 Field Regiment Association at the forefront and as one of the leading Associations still represented on ANZAC Day. Anzac Day 2024 With just 2 days until Anzac Day, we are looking forward to catching up with members, family and friends of The 2/2nd Field Regiment Association at the Anzac Day March.
