“During the advance through the mountain pass leading to WONGINARA NEW GUINEA, on 29 March 1945, the forward troops were fired on and one man badly wounded. He was lying in the centre of a clearing in the jungle and exposed to fire from enemy snipers situated on the high ground on both sides. Repeated attempts to extricate him failed as his rescuers were fired on each time they entered the clearing. Noting this Private ARMBRUSTER ran to the side of the wounded man and standing erect, sprayed the general area of the snipers on both sides of the pass with fire from his Bren. Then, stooping, he picked up his fallen comrade and calmly carried him to safety. His outstanding gallantry and superb courage saved the life of his friend and served as a conspicuous example of comradeship throughout the Battalion.” – Gazetted Citation
