Courage and coolness at BARDIA 20 Dec 1940 to 5 Jan 1941.
“Bombardier Auton was a troop N.C.O. Signals during the whole of the period 20 Dec to 5 Jan at Bardia. He continuously supervised the laying of telephone lines to exposed Observation Posts. When his Battery Commander was wounded, and captured, he went forward alone to investigate what had happened, and though under continuous fire from machine guns he proceeded to the end of the line and discovered traces of the missing Observation Post party before returning to his maintenance post to seek further orders. At Tobruk he carried out his work in the same cool and courageous manner.” – Gazetted Citation.
