Coolness and courage from 20 Dec 1940 to 3 Jan 1941 in MIDDLE EAST.
“This officer occupied on Observation Post (O.P.) about 300 yards short of the enemy wire during operations from 20 December to 3 January. There were no infantry close enough to give him support, and to occupy the O.P. he had to go forward before dawn and return after dark each day. On two of the days of the actual battle of Bardia he occupied an O.P. in the open near Post eleven, there was no cover available and despite the fact that he under heavy rifle, machine gun, and shell fire, he remained continuously at his post, and coolly directed the fire of his Battery to support a sorely harassed infantry company. At Tobruk his work was of the same high standard. Capt. McPherson’s coolness and courage ensured the successful shooting of his Battery, and were an example to the whole Regiment.” – Gazetted Citation.
