"Captain F.J. Young served with the 2/2 Field Regiment AIF during the 1939-45 war and had battle experience with that unit in Libya and New Guinea. His demeanour and personality earned respect and admiration from both officers and men, and his unflagging cheerfulness particularly after he was wounded in action did much to keep the morale of the troops at high standard. Captain Young joined the CMF immediately it was formed after the war and was given the task of training recruits of 2Fd Regt, which he did with efficiency and a cheerfulness that incalcated in the recruits a fine spirit of "Esprit de Corps" and a great keenness. He has carried out his subsequent duties in this unit with much the same zest and cheerfulness which has impressed all with whom he comes in contact." – Gazetted Citation
