“At Brallos on 22 April 1941 when a gunner was seriously wounded in a forward gun position he showed considerable endurance, coolness and courage in bringing him up a difficult goat track in full view of the enemy, and under their shell and machine gun fire. He then returned to the guns and assisted in attending the casualties still under continuous shell fire and intermittent air attack. Before leaving the gun position he salvaged a pistol, prismatic compass, tommy gun and rifle. On Crete from 23 to 29 May when supplies could not be obtained because of enemy action he courageously went out and foraged for them for his comrades, and on two occasions he went out under continuous machine gunning for first aid for wounded men. During the three days of the withdrawal, without being ordered to do so he kept a four gallon tin and spent most of the daytime going out distances of up to 8 miles under continuous enemy air activity to obtain water for the battery.” – Gazetted Citation.
